What School Boards Should Know About STEM Education

Abstract:

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education is critical to the economic growth of our country. Our schools are not providing enough of an enticing spark for these fields to attract a sufficient number of students into the college fields needed for the high-tech workplace of today and tomorrow. School boards play an essential role in helping schools prepare children for a dynamic future - one we can scarcely imagine ourselves. While the proper investment in technological infrastructure can help, the deeper transformations needed in our schools are addressed through transforming the learning process and adjusting the curriculum in ways that expose students to the skills and habits of mind that they will need to have a thriving future. These changes are explored in a dynamic presentation that not only shows methods known to be effective, but explores the kinds of staff development districts need to provide to help teachers as they modify their practice in support of all your district's students.
