Making a Difference
New tools for a timeless purpose

Combining technological resources and the wisdom of life experiences, gifted educators can reach out to students and help them make sense of learning and living in the classroom and beyond.

The future of education is rushing headlong back to the human heart, utilizing technologies that give us greater tools to bridge the distance. Because of this growing reconnection to our most basic human needs, our role as educators is undergoing a dramatic and exciting transformation.

Today's educators have a panoramic array of materials and avenues at their disposal to facilitate learning. No longer is the teacher the sole source of all knowledge. Drawing on a range of resources, and applying the wisdom of their own life experiences, gifted educators emerge as role models for students who must learn to find and use resources and make sense of them in the context of their own short-term projects and long-term goals.

Today's students come to us with widely different learning styles, and from countries around the world with varied cultures, languages and socioeconomic conditions. Therefore, just as one source of information no longer suffices, a single teaching style or methodology cannot be expected to reach every learner. Flexibility and multiplicity of approaches -- such as using multimedia to address multiple intelligences -- are the hallmark of an exemplary educator. And for students steeped in multimedia, combining visuals and music, particularly to convey emotionally significant content, is not only powerful but also imperative.

It is an exhilarating time to be an educator. Freed from the what (responsibility of purveying all the content), and armed with the how (a myriad of technological and pedagogical tools), we can achieve the why (the purpose which drew us to this noblest of professions). We can reach every learner -- and we will make a difference in their lives.
