Technology in The China Shop
Havoc or haven?

One day the owners of the education china shop decided to upgrade their establishment by adding a nice bull. This bull came with the latest operating system, tons of free software, LAN and WAN, routers and switches, and, of course, a 90-day warranty. According to the manual, all the owners had to do was turn the fully loaded bull loose in their china shop. Many broken dishes later.

In this informative session, while we have fun with technology, we take the challenges in education very seriously. We acknowledge the alarming rate of illiteracy, the increasing retention rate, the changing demographics of our student population where more and more students speak little or no English, and where too many live on the wrong side of the digital divide.

We also recognize that the stakes are too high for us to let our students fail. Some states actually base the number of new prison cells on 4th grade reading scores. With 40% of our fourth graders are reading below grade level, it's about more than test scores. It's about precious human lives being wasted. It's about the havoc and destruction they can wreak on our society when they grow up and see no better options for survival.

We must take the technology bull by the horns. We must harness its power to individualize instruction, to be that patient tutor who plays alphabet songs over and over until the young child learns his letters. We must find that that exemplary software that uses visuals, animation and music as well as text to tap the learning ability of each student. We must use the vast resources from the Internet to break down classroom walls and open a world of experiences to students as we teach them decision-making and social responsibility.

We cannot settle for mere competence in teachers or students. We are committed to reaching every learner, to helping each student discover and achieve his highest potential and purpose. This has always been our mission. For the first time in history – with technology – we actually have the tools to do the job.
